Mileage allowance calculator, at HMRC rates
Work out the most you can pay, or be paid, tax-free for business journeys in your own vehicle this tax year.
Enter your business miles to see it, and how it’s worked out.
The rule behind it
HMRC sets approved mileage allowance payments. For a car or van: 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year, then 25p. Motorcycles: 24p. Bicycles: 20p. Carrying a colleague on the same business trip adds up to 5p a passenger per mile. Passenger payments are only tax-free if they’re paid; there’s no relief to claim on them.
The car and van rate for the first 10,000 miles went up from 45p to 55p on 6 April 2026. For miles before then, it’s 45p.
A mileage claim is worked out at these rates, approved like any other expense and posted to the ledger.
Questions
Do I count my commute?
No. Only business journeys count: travel to a temporary workplace or between sites, not your normal journey to work.
What if I use more than one car?
The 10,000-mile threshold is for all your cars and vans together, for one employer, in the tax year.
Is this the same for the self-employed?
Sole traders can use the same rates for a car, van or motorcycle under simplified expenses, instead of working out actual costs.
