| Labour | £1,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Materials | £200.00 |
| Bill | £1,200.00 |
| CIS deduction at 20% of labour | −£200.00 |
| You pay the subcontractor | £1,000.00 |
The deduction is credited to CIS control in your ledger and goes on that month’s CIS300.
CIS deductions on supplier bills
Marked as a subcontractor
A supplier’s record holds their UTR, verification number and status, and the status sets the rate: 20%, 30% or gross.
On labour, not materials
The deduction is worked out on the labour on each bill, excluding VAT and materials, and rounded down to the penny.
Posted to CIS control
When the bill is approved, the deduction is credited to CIS control, and you pay the subcontractor the rest.
Counted when it’s paid
A bill goes on the return for the tax month it was paid in, not the month on the invoice.
The CIS300 return Hyrlo prepares
Reports, then CIS monthly return: one tax month at a time, from the 6th to the 5th, with the date it’s due.
In the form’s order
For each subcontractor: gross paid, materials, the amount liable and the deduction. Pounds as the form takes them, the deduction to the penny.
Checked against CIS control
Each payment’s deduction is matched to what the ledger credited, and any document that differs is named.
Statements for subcontractors
A payment and deduction statement for each subcontractor, as a PDF, and the whole return as a CSV.
Nil months and declarations
A month with no payments shows as a nil return, and the return’s declarations are listed as a checklist.
You file it on GOV.UK
HMRC takes the CIS300 through its own online service, so Hyrlo prepares the return and you file it there, by the 19th. Hyrlo doesn’t file it for you, and doesn’t verify subcontractors with HMRC.
Once it’s filed, record it as filed in Hyrlo, and the month keeps one record of what went to HMRC.

Questions
Does Hyrlo file the CIS300 for me?
No. Hyrlo prepares the return, with its figures in the order HMRC’s online form asks for them, and you file it on GOV.UK. Then you record it as filed in Hyrlo.
Does Hyrlo verify subcontractors with HMRC?
No. You verify them with HMRC as you do now, then record each subcontractor’s UTR, verification number and status on their supplier record. The status sets the deduction rate.
Which payments go on the return?
Payments to subcontractors in the tax month, from the 6th to the 5th, by the date they were paid rather than the invoice date. A member of staff’s expense claim never counts.
What if I paid no subcontractors this month?
Hyrlo shows the month as a nil return, which you file on GOV.UK by the 19th, as you would any other month.
I’m a subcontractor too. Does Hyrlo handle deductions taken from me?
Not today. Hyrlo handles the contractor’s side: deductions on the bills you pay, and the CIS300. Deductions your contractors take from your own invoices aren’t worked out on the invoice.
Does Hyrlo do Making Tax Digital?
Hyrlo prepares and exports the VAT return. Direct Making Tax Digital submissions are not included; use compatible filing software or your accountant.
