Questions

What’s the difference between a purchase order and an invoice?

You send a purchase order to a supplier to order something. The supplier sends you an invoice to be paid for it, quoting your PO number.

Do small businesses need purchase orders?

Not by law. They help once more than one person buys things: what was agreed is settled before the money goes, and the supplier’s invoice can be checked against the order.

Is a purchase order a contract?

Once the supplier accepts it, a purchase order usually forms the contract for that order, on the terms it sets out. Keep any terms you rely on in writing.
